Hello!! Welcome to the Gifted Heart Cakes Blog! We will be updating the blog on a regular basis with our latest cakes, tutorials, hints and tips and supplier spotlights. I hope you find the info interesting and that you like the cakes!!
So.. Why cakes? Ever since I can remember, I have always been into arts and crafts. I trained in Graphic design, I do silk paintings in my (rare) spare time and used to dabble in logo and web design too. I guess the cakes were a natural progression really as I view what I do as “Cake Art” I love the thought of changing an everyday item like a cake into a piece of art. There is also nothing better than feeling a part of making someone’s special day memorable and seeing the look on their face when they first see the cake. Cake making is in the blood to as my lovely Nan – “Nanny Jean” has also made wedding cakes for many years and has been a real inspiration to me.
How did we choose the name - Gifted Heart Cakes? I believe a gift should always come from the heart, something that has been thought about and care taken to choose it and that ethos is really what our cakes are all about too so choosing the name was very easy for me. It just felt right - Our cakes are truly a gift from the heart
What is our favourite part of the process? There are a lot of steps we follow in your cakes journey, but the first would be the cake mix. I have a regimented method regarding how I mix my cakes – slightly OCD one might say but it works for me and that’s what I stick to. I love my chocolate cake mix. Once all the initial ingredients are mixed and its ready to be transferred into the cake tin it resembles and tastes like chocolate mousse! devine!. so hard to resist and on many occasion I have been known to spoon a little into a bowl as a treat for when I have finished. A slightly increased waist size later I have decided to go on a diet so that is now a treat of the past! and secondly I would have to say the decorating. Its so great to turn the cake/blank canvass into something really special, I am always looking out for new and interesting techniques to use.
People often ask me what my favourite cake has been to make? Now this is a toughie! Every cake means a lot to me. I’m not sure I can narrow it down to one but here’s my top 3! 1. My Orchid cascade wedding cake. This was the first wedding cake I made, I had never made a wedding cake before and had to go on a crash course for orchid making. It was a lot of hard work but very worth it. 2. My birdcage cupcake tower – this was an idea I had in my mind for a long time and I created it for a wedding fayre we were attending. I was so pleased with the vintage colours and the over all look of it we always get lots of comments and its a very popular design this year with our couples. And finally… our Vintage button cake – a cute little three tier covered in white chocolate moulded buttons. It took hours to make and my partner Stu, who was the brains behind this one, says he never wants to see a button again!
